There were so many goofy candid moments I had a hard time narrowing down the slideshow selection to a reasonable length :) . I am upgrading all of my web-slideshows to this new format in the next few weeks. Be sure to check out HD if you can because it looks amazing. Congrats again Patrick and Chini!

The blistering cold wind masked the suns rays and I ended up with a spectacular cocktail of windburn and sunburn. All in all it was worth it because the photos turned out great! The Winona State University Rugby team initially contacted me to come take photos for their team but during the down time I decided to shoot the other teams just because I enjoyed the game so much. In the past I had never really followed Rugby at all but as it turns out I love the game and the non stop action. A fellow photographer came to the game but wanted to watch the National Championship Basketball game as well so he brought a power inverter and parked his car right next to the field. I like to think that he drew a bigger crowd around his trunk than some of the fields at times. All in all it was an amazing day!

Initially the instructor had us above in an observatory style overlook where the instructor could give feedback and watch from a safe distance. Photographically speaking it was very very uninteresting. Both Chelsey and I decided to hit the floor and see what we could come up with. The students were thrilled to have us there and some even put on a show for us. I had a few close calls with serves and spikes but we both managed to come out unscathed. A photographer on a forum I posted these images on gave me a little insight when he said ” It’s not the ball you need to worry about… It’s the racquet…”. After the fact I realize that it would be awfully hard to explain to the doctors at the hospital how I got the gash in my head… I hope you enjoy the image and please take the time to leave feedback if you care to! Thanks again!

I had a lovely time with Erica and Josh and want to thank them again for their hospitality. Best wishes in the future!

Thankfully spring break has been a blessing in the sense that it has provided me with much needed time for rest and recuperation. Part of that process has been hanging out with friends but the biggest weight off of my shoulders is getting to work ahead on some of these projects that have been nibbling at my toes for the last few months. I will continue to update my website with more pictures and galleries as I can but there is only so much I can do at one time. Next on my list is compiling a gallery for all of the sports photos I have taken in the last 6 months. And for those of you who don’t know it would amount to almost 25,000 still frames. Of course I wont post them all but there are plenty that fit into my favorites category. I am very excited for this summer and the opportunities a head and I cant wait to work with you all more. Thanks for your support!

They were not happy with last years production and in my opinion they were quite frankly rather embarrassing. Photographically there were a few issues like high noise, underexposure, and redeye. Not to mention non team members in the background of the photo as well. This year they decided to go in a new direction and do something a little less formal and a little more fun. Hopefully the team members will see this post and comment on the final product. All feedback is welcome!

For those of you that are interested I have included a link above ( click the picture ) to the new gallery and some recent infrared wedding and vacation pictures. Let me know what you think. Frightened and exhausted from trying to escape the invisible prison of screens we decided that the bird might need saving. I used to be in charge of the Specialty Department at the PetsMart in Plymouth, MN so I knew exactly what to do and how to handle the bird without hurting it. The specialty department consists of small animals, reptiles, fish, and birds. I even had the chance to hand feed a cockatoo chick until it was ready to be adopted. Most of our business was fish but quite often we had to catch finches that had escaped from our cages. Someone would call us saying there was a bird flying around the book isle and we would have to go track it down. All in all one of the most memorable and fun jobs I have ever had.

I really think that Andy enjoyed being able to be that close to nature and to this little bird. We tried to show the young boy that lives next door to us but by that time the bird had caught its breath and felt comfortable flying off to its home.

I was hardly disappointed as these birds really gave me a lot of practice using a long telephoto lens. I recently purchased a Sigma 300mm f/2.8 HSM lens from ebay only to be horrified at the focusing problems that plagued it. I took over a thousand frames over the weekend including nature, birds in flight, football, volleyball, and really any other thing i could find. The lens optically was probably the best it could be but when autofocusing the lens exuded a loud high pitched squeaking sound and the focusing slowed. Thankfully the ebay seller was more than willing to work with me on it and I ended up writing up a little description of what was wrong with it and sent it off to Sigma Repair Center in New York. Hopefully in the next few months I will find a replacement for the one I returned as the few pictures that were in focus sure did pop! Even with the focusing problems it was hard to pry that lens out of my hands…

In case you had not heard this year I was hired as the athletics photographer for Winona State University. So far this year I have covered events such as soccer, football, indoor volleyball and rugby. I am really looking forward to attending more softball, gymnastics and basketball now that the seasons are starting again. As I have the chance my portfolios online will be updated. I am trying to make sure that I keep updating content so people will stop back. As always I appreciate the support! Feel free to comment as well.

While the last few months have been hard work I am excited to have a short break before next season. Last weekend I shot a wedding in Rochester Minnesota for a military couple, I was really impressed with the whole event. All in all it went without a hitch ( other than the bride and groom that is ). I am also happy to announce that in light of the season being over I am going to have a lot more time to bring you some more pictures from my misadventures recently. You can look forward to some light painting, startrails, wildlife, sports, weddings, and kayaking pictures.

I am also ramping up my services to help provide my customers with a better product in the end. This includes custom CD trays, Flushmount albums, and more. Check back to see my progress as I will be updating often.

I had such a good time working with Annie and Paul I am speechless. I wish I had a chance to get to know them sooner because they are really fantastic people and are very deserving of each other. They ended up with a full coverage package so I had a long few days but it was worth it in the end. We managed to make some really memorable pictures together and if you click on the picture above you will get just a glimpse of what I mean. I wish Annie and Paul the best for the future!

I have been really busy with school work and things but I promise I will be better about updating this site. I have added a selection of pictures that I have edited to have a duotone effect. It is something that I had discovered a few weeks ago and just recently started playing around with it. I am a really big fan of the effect and I plan to incorporate it with my work in the future. If you would like details on how the effect is achieved you can contact me and I can provide the photoshop action for your own uses.

It was a really special experience for me and they were very accommodating while we were their guests. All in all it was the single most memorable vacation to date!

Now back to business though. I have been playing with startrails a little more lately and have had a few chances to get away from the city lights enough to have a good show. This was taken in Northern Scottsdale on a semi clear night. The exposure for this picture was a little bit more than an hour of time creating the streaking effect. I hope to go out either tonight or tomorrow and capture some more striking compositions with the stars in them in Credit River Township south of the cities. I would be staying with Brian and Liljana, friends of the family.

Merry Christmas to all of you and remember the holiday season is not about gifts or giving. It is about forgetting and forgiving all the bad and the worse that has happened and moving forward in life with the good human nature that we try to achieve.

I know I have been really bad at updating my blog lately but with good reason. I was on vacation in the wonderful state of Arizona. Lisa and I bought tickets a few months ago to fly down and stay with her aunt and uncle for 5 days. I was so excited coming to the end of finals week that was all I could think about. I am pretty sure that this vacation was well deserved. I am going to slowly update you with pictures and stories as I sort through all of the pictures. This is one for the archives though.

This picture was taken from the top of Squaw Peak in Phoenix Arizona. After an exhausting climb with Lisa to over 2800 ft above sea level we were greeted with this beautiful vista. I feel like this picture should go with a caption like on those motivational posters. Maybe I will publish one : ) Any who if you have any suggestions for this posters caption please email me and I will update accordingly. ( You can also leave a comment here if it is easier )

Finals are coming up in the next few days for me and I am pretty excited. I feel confident that I will do well on the finals I have left. I am most worried about my Pathophysiology final. I have received a number of new orders from my High School Sports Galleries and I want to thank all of the parents who have supported me.

A student here at WSU was reported missing on Thursday of last week by his family and he was found on Friday afternoon. This is what the school released to the student body

Winona State University regrets to announce the death of one of its students, Matthew Alexander Gille, a junior from Rockford, Illinois. His body was found this morning near the Garvin Heights Overlook in Winona. The body was recovered from a wooded area later in the afternoon. The exact cause of death is not known at this time. The Winona Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and the Winona County Dive and Rescue Team assisted with the recovery of the student’s body. More details will be provided pending investigation by law enforcement officials. The student was reported missing on Thursday. His family, campus security and law enforcement officials were notified shortly thereafter. A search began on Thursday evening and was narrowed to the Garvin Heights area after his car was found near the overlook. The search resumed on Friday morning, leading to the location of the body.

Freshman year I lived down the hall from Matt and got to know him in passing. He was a nice guy, well loved, and he will be missed no doubt. It is pretty scary to think that this could have been anyone that I know. There has been a huge outpouring of support for the family and through Facebook people have started to collect and assemble a storybook of his life experiences as seen though others eyes. Pretty amazing how many people one person could touch.

Wish me luck on finals and I will keep you as updated as I can. I leave for Arizona on the 15th of December!

I went exploring in downtown Winona and visited some of the older historic parts of the community. I stopped by the grain mill for a few shots of the steam rising from the smokestacks but the sun was too bright in the reflections off of the silos so it was hard to meter. Especially in infrared because I have to figure out exposure by trial and error for the most part. I stopped by Circle Six Design again to get some help with some new wordpress plugins. Brett said that he would be more than happy to help me out and that is very generous of him. The picture today is of the Winona Bridge from Minnesota to Wisconsin. I did not have my tripod with but I took 4 overlapping pictures and stiched them together after I was nice and warm inside with Photoshop CS2. I am pretty excited about the quality of pictures I have been taking lately. I guess I am on a lucky streak! I hope all is well.

I struggled with the lighting in the gym but I was able to capture most of the action. I still need to get used to switching between sports. Tracking each sport requires a certain style and speed of shooting. So far Football is my favorite sport to photograph but it is also the most dangerous. The last game of the season this year I was almost leveled by the opposing teams linebacker as he came in for a tackle. Thankfully I had enough brains to jump out of the way before he made contact. As we speak the photos are being uploaded to digiproofs so that parents can order copies for themselves. As soon as I have this information available to me I will post it on this website and email those that have expressed interest. Also from now on after clicking on images to enlarge them I will also be including the exposure information for those that are interested as requested by another photographer.

As promised the pictures from Tuesdays game are up for purchase on www.digiproofs.com the password is “winonabb” without the quotes. If you have any questions or comments please leave a comment below.

There are also some paints on vehicles and street signs that reflect light in strange ways.

After taking a number of pictures with a dedicated digital infrared camera I have found that usually 1/125th of a second ISO 100 f/8 is a good starting point for exposure. You can also create some pretty dynamic lighting using sunlight and shadow because of the extreme difference in exposure.
