Sorry it has been so long since an update but my time has been well spent. I decided to invest in some new gear and most of my summer I have been working on honing my skills and mastering what I already know. There are going to be a number of huge updates to this website in the next few weeks. This year I have been working with more and more Seniors in High School to create memorable portraits to capture the spirit of youth in transition. I have to say out of all of the things to photograph it is really interesting to work with other creative individuals who are willing to do just about anything to make a cool photo. Here are some of my favorites from yesterday.

The blistering cold wind masked the suns rays and I ended up with a spectacular cocktail of windburn and sunburn. All in all it was worth it because the photos turned out great! The Winona State University Rugby team initially contacted me to come take photos for their team but during the down time I decided to shoot the other teams just because I enjoyed the game so much. In the past I had never really followed Rugby at all but as it turns out I love the game and the non stop action. A fellow photographer came to the game but wanted to watch the National Championship Basketball game as well so he brought a power inverter and parked his car right next to the field. I like to think that he drew a bigger crowd around his trunk than some of the fields at times. All in all it was an amazing day!

I have always enjoyed the challenges that working for Winona State provides but some of the projects I have to complete are not as fulfilling as my own personal projects. As often as possible I like to step outside of what I am comfortable with and try new things to challenge the way I think creatively.

In this case a real estate agent sent a photographer to one of my friends houses to take photos for the listing online and the brochures. While the photographs were probably adequate to some they certainly were not going to get people to come look at the home. In general the photos were washed out by the mid day sun and taken from odd angles that could have been chosen more carefully. In the end my friend asked me to come in and try and take some photos that showed the house literally in a better light. One of the keys to online listings is having wonderful photos that will catch someones eye and get them to consider making a visit to an open house; This is especially true with high end homes in todays housing market.

Following in Shutter Scripts footsteps I decided to broaden my horizons and challenge myself again. This image is a series of 6 HDR images that have been stitched together to form a 2×3 Panoramic photo of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart here in Winona MN. The Cathedral recently remodeled the entire inside of the church and I have to say the modern amenities and accessibility is a welcome change.. Not to mention is it simply gorgeous. For those of you that dont know HDR is a special photographic technique to capture as much detail as possible in an image. In this case the end result is an amazingly sharp 28 megapixel image. The file on my hard drive while I was editing it was over 4 Gigabytes in size but now saved it is a little over 337 megabytes in size. I posted the image a little bit larger so that you can see just how much detail there is in the highlights and in the image itself.

HDR imaging is accomplished by taking three pictures at different exposures and blending them together in a program like photoshop. This gives you the maximum dynamic range possible. This technique is not always applicable because of the need of a tripod and a still subject. Newer video cameras employ a similar technology where the lens actually splits the light and sends it to three sensors one for red, blue, and green. These 3ccd cameras have a much better image quality than most with just one.

Initially the instructor had us above in an observatory style overlook where the instructor could give feedback and watch from a safe distance. Photographically speaking it was very very uninteresting. Both Chelsey and I decided to hit the floor and see what we could come up with. The students were thrilled to have us there and some even put on a show for us. I had a few close calls with serves and spikes but we both managed to come out unscathed. A photographer on a forum I posted these images on gave me a little insight when he said ” It’s not the ball you need to worry about… It’s the racquet…”. After the fact I realize that it would be awfully hard to explain to the doctors at the hospital how I got the gash in my head… I hope you enjoy the image and please take the time to leave feedback if you care to! Thanks again!

I had a lovely time with Erica and Josh and want to thank them again for their hospitality. Best wishes in the future!

Thankfully spring break has been a blessing in the sense that it has provided me with much needed time for rest and recuperation. Part of that process has been hanging out with friends but the biggest weight off of my shoulders is getting to work ahead on some of these projects that have been nibbling at my toes for the last few months. I will continue to update my website with more pictures and galleries as I can but there is only so much I can do at one time. Next on my list is compiling a gallery for all of the sports photos I have taken in the last 6 months. And for those of you who don’t know it would amount to almost 25,000 still frames. Of course I wont post them all but there are plenty that fit into my favorites category. I am very excited for this summer and the opportunities a head and I cant wait to work with you all more. Thanks for your support!

My friends Timmy Johnson, Steven Frank, and Jef Clements roped me into participating in this ridiculous challenge. For those of you that don’t know what it is all about; The challenge is to pick from the criteria that they release the morning of the competition and write, cast, shoot, edit, and master a three minute movie that meets all of their criteria in less than 24 hours. Sounds easy right? Without the help of our crew we would have never made it.. and even then it was a close call.

Most of the shooting was done by me, Steve is our master editor, Timmy was the main character and audio guy and Jef was our villain and general supporting mastermind. All in all it was the craziest 24 hours I have had in a long time. Any feedback is welcome :)

We actually took a photography class together here at Winona State. I really love how much fun these two have together and they are certainly much more natural when they aren’t being told how to pose. Most of these photos were taken down by the big lake in Winona MN and around Veterans Park. They really needed something quick so they could send out their invitations so we just took a half hour of time to take some creative poses to send to their families and friends. Look forward to seeing wedding photos in the future as well. I also wanted to let you know that I am planning on changing my digital proofing services to one that will allow me to change the look and feel to match my website here. Thankfully the level of service that both of us will receive will remain the same. I am also looking at alternatives for the albums I have been using. Right now I am leaning back towards the Zookbook because it is such a great product.

To thank the teams for letting me come and photograph them I am giving 15% of all of the orders back to the school to provide our students with better academic programs and supplies. If you are interested in ordering pictures from the event please share this link with friends and family of the teams Online Photo Orders . Also if you know of any other teams that would like coverage please send them my website and I will try my best to work them into my schedule. The dancers and instructors did a wonderful job of getting everything coordinated for opening night. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to come in and photograph one of the dress rehearsals so that the photos could be used for publicity purposes. Ryan Hawkins, one of the stage managers, put together an awesome slideshow that was shown in the mail hall of the Performing Arts Center to all of the people attending the event. All in all I am very satisfied with the photos and I hope that the people over at Dancescape are too.

In looking through my older photos from years past I realized that I need to find a goal for my work. So much of what I do has been personal work up until mid-2007. After that time almost all of my photographs had been centered around work or assignments. So in the spirit of revitalization I have decided to publish a photo book with the help of a few other photographers in the Winona area.

What exactly the book is about I am not sure yet but I know that I need to participate in more personally motivated work to instill more creativity into my wedding photography and beyond. I have had a few ideas for books but I am not sure if they have been completed yet. I would like you guys to vote for your favorite ideas and let me know if you want to help at all or be featured in it. So here are the ideas:

What is your greatest desire? The feature photo for this entry was taken during one of my Visual Communication classes in College. The assignment was to have a short conversation with someone about their greatest desire in life or their greatest goal and to convey that in the photo. Pretty interesting stuff. I think I had about 10-15 really interesting portraits using the cardboard method suggested by my teacher. I think I might keep using my friends and family to keep building an interesting group of photos. In this case I had Pete Boysenpose for probably one of my favorite photos of all time.

Time Perspective This one is a bit harder to explain.. And possibly a bit more ambitious as well. Basically I am interested in how things change over time. But this is not limited to time as we know it. I was also thinking about exploring Day and Night and the 4 seasons. So basically I would take the same photo at the same location at two different times / seasons / or conditions to demonstrate the power of our planet and mother nature.

I know I had a few other ideas but I cant remember them right now. I will add them as I remember. As always feedback is always appreciated

With everything going on in my life right now it is hard to answer open ended questions like: “What are you going to do over summer vacation?”, The fact of the matter is I don’t have the foggiest idea yet. What I mean is I am planning on one thing and one thing only - Revitalization. It is a term that my good friend and colleague Scott Werley uses a lot in his speech and also his fantastic work as a DJ. This goal is not something that is put into a day planner and simply checked off your to do list. There is a lot more to it.

My goal this summer is to help myself understand how I work. Why I feel the way I do and what I need to do to keep myself healthy and happy. So much of my life has been focused towards others needs that I have severely neglected my own. Even in the past where taking care of myself was a weekly assignment from my boss called “sharpening the saw” I seemed to find a way out of it. Or use a lame example that wasn’t true to myself. I think at the end of the day there is only one thing that will allow me to keep doing what I am doing.. Vacation. Now my father probably won’t be all for this idea but I need to start living my life instead of letting it slip through my fingers. I plan on spending a great deal of time outdoors and taking photos for myself and my business. Keep in mind it won’t be all fun and games. In the evenings I plan on working with High School Seniors on their Senior Photos and also taking photos for local amateur sports teams. Summer leagues should provide ample opportunity to make some money and relax at the same time.

Now about the photo. One of my favorite memories from the last year was going kayaking with my good friend Andy Hamilton on the Mississippi River near Winona Minnesota. This photo was taken with an old Mamiya 645 Medium Format camera and a 35mm lens. The spots and specks you see on the film itself is residue from the river when I fell in camera and all. After this day I got insurance on all of my equipment and decided to be a bit more careful when getting out of the water. Thanks again for stopping by. Keep looking for more updates.

I had a few close calls including a car crash and a few falls on the ice. Some people might be frustrated with their bad luck or their fortune but I cant be focused too much on that right now. There are so many good things happening to me right now that I cant afford to be sidetracked by something so small and insignificant as material possessions.

While these things are a great inconvenience at times I know that it still could be much worse. I just recently started the Nursing Program at Winona State. That means they think I am the best of the best and there is no turning back for the next year and a half. The workload is ridiculous and I chuckle when I think I am paying them to do this to me. I am working on getting things organized in my life and consolidating all of the commitments I can. I am dedicated to photography but I need to turn it back into something that I crave. I can’t let it become a stressor for ever again.

The photo you see above was taken outside of a little community restaurant near Winona. The photojournalism club had gone hiking last year through a state park nearby and afterward we sat down to enjoy a nice relaxing dinner and sunset. I miss having time to myself. If you care to leave a comment on this post describing something I should try and do to relax and enjoy my time in college. Thanks again everyone for all of your love and support. I would not be where I am without it.

They were not happy with last years production and in my opinion they were quite frankly rather embarrassing. Photographically there were a few issues like high noise, underexposure, and redeye. Not to mention non team members in the background of the photo as well. This year they decided to go in a new direction and do something a little less formal and a little more fun. Hopefully the team members will see this post and comment on the final product. All feedback is welcome!

I am pretty impressed with it so far and I love the ability to view images in a larger format as opposed to the internal galleries that limited the size greatly. For those of you that are interested I have included a link above ( click the picture ) to the new gallery and some recent infrared wedding and vacation pictures. Let me know what you think. Frightened and exhausted from trying to escape the invisible prison of screens we decided that the bird might need saving. I used to be in charge of the Specialty Department at the PetsMart in Plymouth, MN so I knew exactly what to do and how to handle the bird without hurting it. The specialty department consists of small animals, reptiles, fish, and birds. I even had the chance to hand feed a cockatoo chick until it was ready to be adopted. Most of our business was fish but quite often we had to catch finches that had escaped from our cages. Someone would call us saying there was a bird flying around the book isle and we would have to go track it down. All in all one of the most memorable and fun jobs I have ever had.

I really think that Andy enjoyed being able to be that close to nature and to this little bird. We tried to show the young boy that lives next door to us but by that time the bird had caught its breath and felt comfortable flying off to its home.

Just after dusk there was a cat walking though campus. Curiously and cautiously poking around the freshly fallen leaves it found its way into the bike racks around Phelps Hall. I followed the cat for a bit to see how close I could get before it would notice me. After it scampered away the first time I saw it stop on this window well on Somsen Hall I snapped this photo. Pretty cool looking with the fall colors… Anyway.. Just thought I would share a bit more from my latest misadventures. It always pays to have a camera with even if the girls on campus think you are a creeper. hehe.

I was hardly disappointed as these birds really gave me a lot of practice using a long telephoto lens. I recently purchased a Sigma 300mm f/2.8 HSM lens from ebay only to be horrified at the focusing problems that plagued it. I took over a thousand frames over the weekend including nature, birds in flight, football, volleyball, and really any other thing i could find. The lens optically was probably the best it could be but when autofocusing the lens exuded a loud high pitched squeaking sound and the focusing slowed. Thankfully the ebay seller was more than willing to work with me on it and I ended up writing up a little description of what was wrong with it and sent it off to Sigma Repair Center in New York. Hopefully in the next few months I will find a replacement for the one I returned as the few pictures that were in focus sure did pop! Even with the focusing problems it was hard to pry that lens out of my hands…

Don’t be fooled, last summer he worked his butt of so he could enjoy life a bit after he graduated. I have to say that he is one of my greatest role models in the sense that he is enjoying life to its fullest extent. I am glad he started to miss all of his friends in Winona because it was a blast having him back in town. I happened to snap this portrait of him while he was checking his Facebook profile no doubt. In the near future he plans on heading to New Zealand for a few months.
In case you had not heard this year I was hired as the athletics photographer for Winona State University. So far this year I have covered events such as soccer, football, indoor volleyball and rugby. I am really looking forward to attending more softball, gymnastics and basketball now that the seasons are starting again. As I have the chance my portfolios online will be updated. I am trying to make sure that I keep updating content so people will stop back. As always I appreciate the support! Feel free to comment as well.
